Why Do We Have Water Outage in Ulaanbaatar Every Summer?

Thank God, the hot water is back!

Ever wondered why UB hot water gets cut off each summer?

It’s because 50% of our sewerage pipelines are expired and every year Water Supply and Sewerage Authority of UB (WSSAUB) digs up certain areas, changes the pipes for about 10 bn MNT (5 mln USD) so that they don’t fail in the winter.

Changing all the pipelines in one season would require several hundred bn MNT (100 mln USD?), but everything about WSSAUB needs a makeover.

WSSAUB, established in 1964, is able to clean only 72-74% of the sewage, what with increased number of tanneries, car washes and your toilet flushes.

Even though the Professional Inspection Authority has basically assessed WSSAUB as “soon to crumble down”, they’re still getting by with “scheduled, annual repairs.”

WSSAUB’s sanitation part’s been malfunctioning and for 3 days they poured pure sewage to Tuul River now. It stinks and all the plants and animals have died.

But this is not that an important topic though, amirite guys?

I know, right? But the Tuul River pollution takes the cake. It’s stinking up so bad, the Nisekh and Yarmag area has a pungent smell–imagine a tourist coming out of the airport and choking at the stink.
